How I Gained a Completely New Perspective on Therapy

I have attended therapy during several periods of my life. The first time was to process trauma, and later I sought help when I experienced burnout. Therapy has always been something I’ve believed in, but I haven’t always felt that it truly suited me or that I fully connected with the treatment.
Many times, I’ve gone through primary care, where you are often assigned the first available psychologist. That can certainly be helpful, but for me, something has sometimes been missing – perhaps the right match, or an approach that truly resonates with me.
When I first came into contact with Meela, I immediately noticed that something was different. I was able to spend time filling in a form where I could describe my needs, how I function, and what I’m looking for in therapy. This made the matching process feel more thoughtful – and for the first time, I felt that I was truly “well matched”.
I’ve been to therapy before – but finding the right fit through Meela opened up a whole new world.
Through Meela, I also discovered forms of therapy I hadn’t previously experienced: ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) and CFT (Compassion Focused Therapy). Unlike the more traditional CBT I had tried before, I felt these approaches went deeper. It wasn’t just about quickly changing thoughts and behaviours, but about learning to accept emotions, understand yourself, and meet yourself with greater kindness – in order to create more sustainable, long-term change.
It wasn’t always easy. Beginning to work with acceptance and self-compassion felt unfamiliar, and at times challenging. But over time, something started to shift. I learned to pause, to observe my thoughts instead of getting caught up in them, and to treat myself with more understanding rather than criticism.
Mindfulness also became an important part of my journey. Small things, like being more present in the moment or being able to pause in stressful situations, have made a big difference in my everyday life, and have helped me feel a greater sense of balance in both my life and my relationships.
Today, I actively use what I’ve learned in therapy. It’s no longer something that only happens during sessions, but something that stays with me every day – in how I think, feel, and act. And I continue to grow together with my therapist.
I have now seen my therapist more than ten times, and it is without a doubt one of the best investments I have made in myself.
