Morning Anxiety: Why it happens and how to feel better
Have you ever woken up with your heart racing, your tummy in knots, and your mind full of worries? That heavy, nervous feeling in the morning is called morning anxiety. It’s like your brain is running before your feet even hit the floor.
You’re not alone. Many people feel this way. The good news is: that there are gentle ways to understand it and make mornings feel a little lighter.
What is morning anxiety?
Morning anxiety is when you feel scared, worried, or tense as soon as you wake up. You might not even know why. You just feel like something bad is about to happen—even if everything is okay.
Your body might feel shaky. Your heart may beat fast. Your thoughts might go in circles. These are all signs that your body thinks it’s in danger, even when it’s not.
Why does it happen?
Let’s talk about some common reasons:
- Your body’s natural clock: Our bodies follow something called a “body clock.” This clock controls when we sleep, and wake up, and how our body works during the day. In the early morning, your body makes more stress hormones like cortisol. This is normal. It helps you wake up and get moving. But if your body makes too much, it can make you feel anxious or jumpy right when you open your eyes.
- Stress from yesterday: If something made you worried the day before, like work, school, or a hard talk, it can follow you into the next morning. Your brain holds onto those worries and brings them up as soon as you wake up.
- Too much thinking before bed: If your brain is very busy at night, thinking about all the things you need to do or things that went wrong, your sleep might not be restful. And when you wake up, those thoughts are still there, loud and strong.
- Not getting enough sleep: When you don’t get enough sleep, your body and brain get tired. And when you’re tired, it’s harder to handle stress. Everything feels a bit more overwhelming.
- What you eat or drink: Some things, like too much caffeine or sugar, can make anxiety worse. Especially if you drink coffee first thing in the morning before eating anything. Your body might get shaky, and your heart might beat faster, which can feel a lot like anxiety.
What morning anxiety feels like
Morning anxiety can feel different for everyone, but here are some common signs:
- A tight feeling in your chest or tummy
- Fast heartbeatsFeeling shaky or dizzy
- Hard to take deep breaths
- Thoughts that won’t stop
- Worrying about the day ahead
- Feeling like something bad will happen
Simple ways to manage Morning Anxiety
Now that we know what morning anxiety is, let’s talk about how to feel better. Here are some kind, simple tools you can try:
1. Breathe slowly
Deep breathing helps calm your body. Try this:
- Breathe in through your nose slowly… 1, 2, 3, 4.
- Hold your breath… 1, 2.
- Breathe out through your mouth slowly… 1, 2, 3, 4.
Repeat a few times. You’ll start to feel a little more at ease.
2. Have a morning routine
Doing the same gentle things every morning can help your brain feel safe. Maybe you brush your teeth, wash your face, drink water, and listen to soft music. Little habits can make a big difference.
3. Write it down
Grab a notebook and write what’s on your mind. You don’t need to fix anything—just let your thoughts out. This helps your brain feel like it doesn’t have to carry everything alone.
4. Move your body
Stretching, walking, or doing light yoga can help release the tension in your muscles. Even dancing to your favourite song can wake up your happy feelings.
5. Eat something small
Eating a light breakfast can balance your blood sugar and calm your body. Try something simple like toast, fruit, or oatmeal.
6. Speak kindly to yourself
Sometimes, our thoughts can be mean or scary. Try saying kind words to yourself like:
- “I’m okay.”
- “This feeling will pass.”
- “I’m strong, even when I feel nervous.”
Your brain listens to how you talk to yourself.
7. Limit your phone use
Looking at news, emails, or social media first thing can make you feel overwhelmed. Try waiting 30 minutes before checking your phone. Let your morning start softly.
When to ask for help
If morning anxiety happens often and makes it hard for you to enjoy life, it’s okay to ask for help. You don’t have to carry this on your own. Many people feel anxious in the morning. It doesn’t mean you’re weak. It means your body and mind are trying to protect you, even if it’s in the wrong way. You’re doing your best, and that matters.
