What’s the difference between a psychologist and a psychotherapist?
When you’re considering talking to someone about your mental well-being, it can be hard to know who to turn to. Psychologist, psychotherapist, psychiatrist, counselor, or coach – they all have different roles. In this guide, we’ll help you understand the distinctions, making it easier for you to find the right support.
What is a Psychiatrist?
As a licensed medical doctor with specialized training in psychiatry, a psychiatrist can offer a combination of medical and psychological treatment. Unlike other therapists, psychiatrists can prescribe medication for mental illnesses such as depression or bipolar disorder. Their role isn’t just about medication, many psychiatrists also have training in talk therapy and can provide holistic support.
If you suspect your mental health issues might have a medical basis, contacting a psychiatrist can be beneficial for getting the right diagnosis and treatment.
What is a Psychologist?
A psychologist specializes in understanding how humans think, feel, and behave. Their education includes five years at a university followed by one year of supervised practical training.
Psychologists are competent to both diagnose and treat mental health problems, often using methods like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or psychodynamic therapy (PDT).
For example, if you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, or stress, a psychologist can be the right choice to help you process and understand your emotions.
If you need a conversational partner who can provide insight and tools to feel better, a psychologist is often a good option.
What is a Psychotherapist?
A psychotherapist has undergone several years of advanced training after an initial degree in fields like healthcare or social work. This specialization makes them experts in helping you process emotions and manage psychological challenges through talk therapy.
Psychotherapists can work with various therapy methods, such as CBT or existential therapy, depending on what suits you best. They are trained to support you through difficult emotional processes.
If you’re looking for in-depth talk therapy, a licensed psychotherapist is a reliable and qualified guide.

A counselor (often translated as “social counselor” or “school counselor” in a Swedish context) is typically someone you encounter in schools, healthcare facilities, or social services. Counselors offer support sessions and help you manage life’s challenges. Most counselors have a degree in social work and assist you through difficult periods, whether it involves personal crises or practical matters like contacting authorities.
Although a counselor isn’t permitted to conduct therapy independently, some may have basic psychotherapy training and can provide therapy under supervision.
If you need someone to offer support with everyday difficulties, a counselor can be a good first step.
What is a Coach?
A coach focuses on personal development and helping you achieve your goals, whether in career, lifestyle, or health. Since the title “coach” isn’t protected, their education and competence vary widely.
A coach can be helpful if you want support in making changes or improving your life, but they are not qualified to treat mental illness.
If you’re looking for motivation and concrete changes in your daily life, rather than treatment for psychological problems, a coach can be a good alternative.
How do I know what kind of help is right for me?
Finding the right support depends on your unique needs. Psychologists, psychotherapists, and other professionals all offer valuable help, but with different approaches and areas of focus.
Choose a Psychologist if:
- You need a diagnosis or a comprehensive psychological assessment (e.g., for ADHD, autism, or other mental health conditions).
-
You want in-depth talk therapy. Many psychologists are also trained psychotherapists.
Choose a Psychotherapist if:
-
Your primary goal is focused talk therapy to work through emotional or behavioral challenges like anxiety, depression, trauma, or relationship issues.
Other professionals to consider:
-
Psychiatrist: A medical doctor who can diagnose and prescribe medication for mental health conditions. Choose a psychiatrist if you suspect a medical or biological component, or if you may need medication.
-
Counselor: Offers supportive conversations and practical guidance, often available in schools or healthcare settings.
-
Coach: Helps with personal development and goal-setting. Coaches are not trained to treat mental illness, and their qualifications can vary.
Choosing a qualified professional in Sweden.
In Sweden, titles like “Legitimerad Psykolog” (Licensed Psychologist) and “Legitimerad Psykoterapeut” (Licensed Psychotherapist) are legally protected. These professionals are licensed by the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen), ensuring they have completed extensive training and meet high standards of competence and ethics.
If you ever feel that the care you receive is inadequate or unprofessional, you have the right to contact the Health and Social Care Inspectorate (IVO).
